Let me share a little something with you that I didn’t know for the first few months that I began surfing. Wetsuits are made for different genders.
I know right, I should have realised sooner, especially when the boys spare wetsuit I was wearing had a large area of loose fabric near the groin… very loose, but only on me. other than the obvious pouch that was going on down there with the boys wetsuits, I felt that my butt and legs were being choked of all blood flow because unlike most of the guys I have shapely thighs that I could most likely crush a watermelon with. Other than the ill-fitting lower region, my arms and waist and shoulders flopped around in this boy suit, letting all the water get into it. Quite honestly I thought this all rather normal, as id never been in a wetsuit that actually fit me… and then I got my own one.
Good gosh I had never felt more ecstatic, a wetsuit that didn’t have some sort of ball pouch, and fit my waist like some sort of water friendly latex catsuit. Who knew! All that time I has spent flopping around in an over large boys wetsuit, and I had never realised why all the girl surfers looked so much better in their wetsuits than I did in mine!
The thing I didn’t realise about wetsuits however, was they were more than just protectors from board chafing or bluebottle stings, but they’re actually used to keep water from touching your body and making you cold. My first surf in my wetsuit was- I admit- deadly uncomfortable as I didn’t realise why I wasn’t being washed clean and cool but the water ( loose boys wetsuits allow all kinds of things down it where it doesn’t fit properly). I’ve warmed up to the idea of my tight fitting girl wetsuit, and am loving it more than anything. I feel like a runway model when I walk down to the water, or a fairy princess in her ballgown ( except my water gown is more practically used). So, if you’re a girl looking at buying a wetsuit, stay clear of the boys ones and make sure it fits nice and snug in all the right places.
