how to not kill or maim yourself when dismounting your board.

There is a story behind the reason for this blog post, any guesses?

Well, you probably guessed right, but I’m going to tell you anyway. After fruitful attempts to ride waves, I get super exited and basically dive off my board. Head first. Into very shallow water. Not a good idea, just saying. Don’t follow my lead. If you find yourself riding a nice little foamy on a generally shallow sand bank and the beach is fast approaching, do not, I repeat DO NOT try and dive off your board like you’re on some spring board about to dive into an Olympic pool. Very different logistics. I made this unusual mistake on my second lesson, where I did all of the above, and nearly broke my neck. Long story short, I lived ( at least I’m mostly sure I’m still alive) and my teacher almost made my mom  sign on of those forms that’s says she can’t sue him if I die.

All in all, going head first into a bank isn’t a good idea, but neither is leg first. You’re probably thinking that leg first can’t be that bad, I mean we walk and do a lot of activities that involve stepping down small heights with our legs, so why did I crawl off the beach in pain after merely stepping off my board?

Answer: I forgot about the sand bank ( don’t do that) and went with my very straight leg into the bank, which resulted in my knee nearly bending in the opposite direction its meant to bend in… not nice.

So, if you’re ever wondering how to fall off your board, the answer is backwards ( once again do not follow my lead and straighten your back so that you do a back flop and almost give yourself a concussion from hitting the water) just stumble off your board backwards, as if you’ve just slipped down a flight of stairs, it’ll be the least painful dismount, even in shallow waters.

Peace out, fall safe x
